Solar Batteries in Sydney

What Sydney Homeowners Should Consider

Every property is different. Your battery solution should be selected according to your home, electricity usage and existing solar system.

Make My Solar helps you review these Sydney-specific considerations and explains how they may affect your battery design, placement and connection requirements.

Coastal Conditions

Sydney properties may experience coastal air, humidity and changing weather conditions. Battery placement, ventilation and installation requirements should be checked for each property.

Seasonal Solar Generation

Solar generation changes throughout the year. Battery sizing should consider your seasonal solar production and typical household consumption.

Export and Network Conditions

Export limits, meter requirements and network rules may affect the way your solar and battery system is designed and connected.

Battery Sizing Explained

How to Work Out a More Suitable Battery Size

The biggest battery is not always the best battery. A useful starting point is to study your evening and overnight electricity use, then check whether your solar system can regularly charge the battery.

Look at evening usage

Check how many kWh your home uses after solar production falls. A home using 6–10 kWh overnight may not need the same battery as a home using 20 kWh.

Check solar surplus

A large battery needs enough surplus solar, or another approved charging strategy, to fill it. If your panels rarely produce enough excess energy, a very large battery may remain partly empty.

Check battery power

kWh describes stored energy. kW describes how much power the battery can deliver at one time. A battery may have enough energy capacity but still be unable to run every high-power appliance together.

Understanding Capacity vs. Power

Feature Capacity (kWh) Power (kW)
Simple Analogy The size of your fuel tank How fast the car can run
What it means How much total energy your battery holds How much electricity it can deliver at once
Why it matters Determines how long your battery lasts overnight Determines how many appliances you can run simultaneously
Our approach: Make My Solar can compare your bill, solar generation, inverter compatibility, evening usage and future plans such as an EV before discussing a suitable battery capacity.
Find Your Battery Category

Which Battery Size Fits Your Daily Energy Profile?

Once you know your evening consumption and solar surplus, match your household to the typical capacity ranges below.

15 kWh

Essential Evening Storage

Ideal for small households looking to eliminate peak evening electricity bills.

  • Target Usage: 5–10 kWh overnight
  • Best For: Running essentials (lights, TV, fridge, internet)
  • Solar Requirement: Pairs well with 5kW–6.6kW solar arrays
15–25 kWh

Full-Home Autonomy

Our most popular range for family homes wanting grid independence well past midnight.

  • Target Usage: 10–18 kWh overnight
  • Best For: Running air conditioning, cooking, and busy evening routines
  • Solar Requirement: Pairs best with 8kW–10kW+ solar arrays
25+ kWh

High Demand & EV Ready

Designed for large homes, multi-generational families, or electric vehicle owners.

  • Target Usage: 20+ kWh overnight or heavy daytime loads
  • Best For: EV overnight charging, pool pumps, and ducted AC
  • Solar Requirement: Requires large solar capacity or multi-inverter setups
Not sure where you fit? Every home's solar generation curve is different. Our team analyzes your actual smart meter data to recommend the exact capacity so you never overpay for storage you won't fill.

Battery Rebates and Incentives

Check Available Battery Support

Eligible Australian households may be able to access support through the Australian Government's Cheaper Home Batteries Program.

How we assist: Our team can help you understand the information required to check potential support, while final eligibility remains subject to the applicable program rules and approved products.

Eligibility Can Vary

  • Battery and installer eligibility requirements
  • System capacity and installation conditions
  • Property and connection requirements
  • Program rules and available funding

Rebates and incentives are subject to government requirements and may change. Eligibility should be checked before any rebate amount is included in a quote.

Understand the Numbers

How a Home Battery Actually Saves You Money

A battery is not automatically a money-saving investment for every home. The value depends on how much solar energy you would otherwise export, how much electricity you buy later, and the battery’s installed cost.

1

Solar surplus

During the day, your panels may produce more electricity than your home is using. Instead of exporting all of that surplus, a battery can store some of it for later.

2

Evening use

After sunset, your panels produce little or no energy. The battery can discharge to support lighting, refrigeration, entertainment and other household loads, reducing grid purchases.

3

Energy price difference

The financial benefit is influenced by the difference between the value of exported solar and the price you would otherwise pay for grid electricity. Your retailer tariff matters.

A Simple Example (Not a guaranteed saving)

Imagine your home uses 13.5 kWh of stored battery energy during peak evening hours. Every kWh of solar energy you use from your battery is electricity you don't have to buy from the grid.

Daily Usage ScenarioExample Calculation
Stored energy used at night13.5 kWh
Grid electricity rate$0.35 per kWh
Estimated daily bill reduction13.5 × $0.35 = $4.725 per day (~$141/month)

Important: This is not the final saving. You must also consider charging losses, battery degradation, the value of solar you could have exported, fixed electricity charges, tariff changes and whether the battery is fully charged and discharged regularly.

How Make My Solar Helps: We handle these complex calculations for you. By analyzing your actual power bill and usage patterns, we determine true potential savings so you choose the right battery size with total clarity.

Sydney Battery Economics

When a Battery May Be Less Suitable

A transparent battery assessment should also explain situations where the financial return may be limited.

Low evening usage

If most of your electricity is used during daylight hours, you may already be using much of your solar directly. A battery may provide less additional value.

Small solar surplus

If your existing solar system produces little excess energy, the battery may not charge consistently from solar alone.

High installation complexity

Switchboard work, long cable runs, difficult access, backup circuits or an older inverter can increase the total project cost.

Payback is an estimate, not a promise

Battery savings depend on your actual energy behaviour, electricity plan, system performance, battery warranty, installation cost and future electricity prices. Government guidance also notes that savings may not always recover the battery cost within its warranty period.

Ask us to show the assumptions behind any estimated savings or payback figure. A useful assessment should explain what happens if your usage changes or your battery does not cycle fully every day.

Backup, Safety and Compatibility

Questions to Ask Before Installing a Battery

These checks can prevent unexpected costs and help you choose a system that is suitable for your property.

Backup power

A normal grid-connected battery does not automatically power the home during a blackout. Backup usually requires compatible equipment, a suitable design and selected backup circuits.

Approved equipment

Check that the battery and inverter are approved for the relevant Australian program and meet applicable electrical and installation requirements.

Warranty details

Review warranty years, throughput or cycle limits, retained-capacity terms, exclusions, monitoring requirements and who handles warranty support.

Before accepting a quote, ask:

  • Is the quoted capacity nominal or usable?
  • What is the continuous and peak power output?
  • Will the system work with my existing inverter?
  • Is blackout backup included, and which circuits will it support?
  • What are the warranty and monitoring arrangements?
  • Is the quoted rebate confirmed or subject to eligibility?
We help you understand the technical questions, compare suitable system configurations and identify information needed before finalising a recommendation.
