What Does a Home Solar Battery Actually Do?
Your solar panels produce electricity when the sun is available. Your home may not use all of that electricity at the same time. A battery gives you another place to use some of that energy later.
Solar Produces
Your rooftop solar system generates electricity during daylight hours.
Home Uses It
Your appliances use solar electricity first when your system is producing enough power.
Battery Stores
Surplus electricity can charge the battery instead of being immediately sent to the grid, subject to your system and connection settings.
You Use It Later
Stored energy can be used later when your solar panels are producing less or not producing.
Your Battery Is Also a Network Connection
Installing a battery in Brisbane is not only about choosing a battery size. Your solar and battery system also needs to meet the requirements of the local electricity network.
Brisbane properties are generally within the Energex network area. Your installer needs to submit the required connection application and make sure the proposed system meets the applicable connection requirements.
Why Energex Requirements Matter
Depending on your property and proposed system, the network may apply requirements around export, inverter capacity, connection type and equipment.
This is one reason we don't recommend choosing a battery simply by looking at the number of kWh on the product label.
The complete system needs to work with your solar panels, inverter, switchboard, meter and network connection.
Learn About Dynamic Connections →Export
Your system may have an approved export limit. The amount can depend on the connection arrangement and network conditions.
Existing Solar
Adding a battery to an existing solar system can involve checking your current inverter, wiring, connection and metering.
Installer Application
Your installer will generally manage the network connection application for your battery system.
What Is an Energex Dynamic Connection?
In simple terms, a dynamic connection allows the network to adjust how much electricity your system can export according to network conditions.
Solar + Battery
Your home generates and stores electricity.
Checks Conditions
Energex can communicate with an approved dynamic system to manage export according to network conditions.
Flexible Limits
Export limits can change according to the available network capacity.
How Much Battery Storage Does Your Brisbane Home Need?
There is no single battery size that is right for every Brisbane household. We look at your actual electricity usage rather than simply selling the largest battery available.
Your Evening Usage
Look at how much electricity your home uses after solar production drops. This helps determine how much stored energy you can actually use.
Your Solar Surplus
A battery needs energy to charge. If your solar system rarely produces enough surplus electricity, installing a very large battery may not make practical sense.
Your Household Loads
Air conditioning, cooking, hot water, pool equipment, refrigeration and other appliances can change the amount of storage and power your home needs.
If your home regularly has several kilowatt-hours of electricity use after sunset, a battery may allow some of your daytime solar generation to cover that later demand. The exact battery size should be calculated from your actual usage and solar production.
kWh vs kW: What's The Difference?
Two numbers you'll see on every battery spec sheet and they measure very different things.
Storage Capacity
Kilowatt-hours measure how much energy your battery can store, like the size of a fuel tank. A 10 kWh battery holds more usable energy than a 5 kWh battery.
Power Output
Kilowatts measure how much power your battery can deliver at any moment, like engine strength. It determines how many appliances you can run at the same time.
Want Power During a Blackout?
This needs to be discussed before the system is designed.
A normal grid-connected solar system does not automatically keep your home powered during a blackout. Battery backup requires a system that is specifically configured and capable of operating safely when the grid is unavailable.
Depending on the system, backup may be provided to selected essential circuits, a phase, or the whole property.
Lights, refrigeration, internet and selected circuits can be prioritised.
Some systems can support broader household backup, subject to system design and available power.
Some islandable systems can continue using solar generation to help charge the battery during an outage.
High-load appliances may need to be managed so the battery system is not overloaded.
Eligible Batteries May Receive Government Support
The Australian Government's Cheaper Home Batteries Program provides support for eligible small-scale battery systems connected to new or existing rooftop solar. Here's what that means in simple terms.
What You Need To Know
- ✓The discount is around 30%: The government currently describes the support as approximately a 30% discount on eligible battery systems. It's not a fixed dollar amount, it's a percentage that applies to the eligible portion of your system.
- ✓The benefit comes through your installer: In most cases, the discount is applied by a participating retailer or installer, so you don't need to apply separately or wait for a rebate.
- ✓Eligibility requirements apply: The battery and installation must meet the program's requirements, including approved products and qualified installation.
- ✓It works with new or existing solar: You can claim support whether you're adding a battery to an existing solar system or installing solar and battery together.
- ✓We can check the requirements for you: When we assess your system, we'll review whether the proposed battery and installation are likely to qualify for the program.

Your Battery Needs the Right Location and Setup
Battery installation is more than mounting a box on a wall. The installation location, equipment, clearances, electrical system and network connection all need to be considered.
- ✓Suitable installation locationThe battery needs to be installed in a location that meets applicable requirements.
- ✓Compatible equipmentBattery, inverter and existing solar equipment need to work together.
- ✓Electrical requirementsThe switchboard, cabling and protection equipment need to be assessed.
- ✓Network approvalThe required Energex connection process needs to be completed before the system is connected.
We Look at Your Home Before Suggesting a Battery
Instead of starting with a battery model, we start with your home and energy use.
Understand Your Solar
We review your solar capacity, inverter and existing system configuration.
Review Your Usage
Your electricity consumption helps determine how much stored energy you can actually use.
Check The Connection
We consider the applicable Energex connection and export requirements.
Design The System
We can then discuss battery capacity, power, backup and future energy needs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, many existing solar systems can be upgraded with battery storage. Your existing inverter, system design, switchboard and connection need to be checked first.
Not necessarily. A battery can often be added to an existing solar installation, but the correct system configuration depends on your existing equipment.
Only if the system is designed and configured for backup operation. A standard grid-connected solar system does not automatically provide blackout power.
Some systems can provide whole-home backup, while others are designed for selected circuits. Battery power output and the property's electrical setup need to be considered.
It is a connection arrangement where export limits can change according to network conditions. It can provide additional flexibility for some approved solar and battery systems.
No. The Cheaper Home Batteries Program has eligibility requirements. Your installer should check whether the proposed system qualifies.
It depends on your solar generation, electricity use, evening consumption, battery power requirements, inverter and future plans. Bigger is not automatically better.
Some battery systems and electricity plans support grid charging. Whether this is appropriate depends on the system configuration, retailer plan and intended operating strategy.
Battery life depends on the product, usage, operating conditions and warranty. When comparing systems, look beyond the warranty length and consider cycles, energy throughput and manufacturer support.
A battery connected to the Energex network requires the applicable connection process. Your installer will generally submit the required application on your behalf.
