Your solar panels produce electricity when the sun is available. Your home may not use all of that electricity at the same time. A battery gives you another place to use some of that energy later.

How Much Battery Storage Does Your Brisbane Home Need?
There is no single battery size that is right for every Brisbane household. We look at your actual electricity usage rather than simply selling the largest battery available.

Look at how much electricity your home uses after solar production drops. This helps determine how much stored energy you can actually use.
Your Solar Surplus
A battery needs energy to charge. If your solar system rarely produces enough surplus electricity, installing a very large battery may not make practical sense.

Air conditioning, cooking, hot water, pool equipment, refrigeration and other appliances can change the amount of storage and power your home needs.
If your home regularly has several kilowatt-hours of electricity use after sunset, a battery may allow some of your daytime solar generation to cover that later demand. The exact battery size should be calculated from your actual usage and solar production.
kWh vs kW: What's The Difference?
Two numbers you'll see on every battery spec sheet and they measure very different things.
Storage Capacity
Kilowatt-hours measure how much energy your battery can store, like the size of a fuel tank. A 10 kWh battery holds more usable energy than a 5 kWh battery.
Power Output
Kilowatts measure how much power your battery can deliver at any moment, like engine strength. It determines how many appliances you can run at the same time.
Want Power During a Blackout?
This needs to be discussed before the system is designed.
A normal grid-connected solar system does not automatically keep your home powered during a blackout. Battery backup requires a system that is specifically configured and capable of operating safely when the grid is unavailable.
Depending on the system, backup may be provided to selected essential circuits, a phase, or the whole property.
Lights, refrigeration, internet and selected circuits can be prioritised.
Some systems can support broader household backup, subject to system design and available power.
Some islandable systems can continue using solar generation to help charge the battery during an outage.
High-load appliances may need to be managed so the battery system is not overloaded.
Eligible Batteries May Receive Government Support
The Australian Government's Cheaper Home Batteries Program provides support for eligible small-scale battery systems connected to new or existing rooftop solar. Here's what that means in simple terms.
What You Need To Know
- ✓The discount is around 30%: The government currently describes the support as approximately a 30% discount on eligible battery systems. It's not a fixed dollar amount, it's a percentage that applies to the eligible portion of your system.
- ✓The benefit comes through your installer: In most cases, the discount is applied by a participating retailer or installer, so you don't need to apply separately or wait for a rebate.
- ✓Eligibility requirements apply: The battery and installation must meet the program's requirements, including approved products and qualified installation.
- ✓It works with new or existing solar: You can claim support whether you're adding a battery to an existing solar system or installing solar and battery together.
