Make More Use of Your Solar Energy
A solar battery can help you store excess solar energy generated during the day and use it when your home needs electricity later.
For Sydney households, the right battery solution depends on your electricity usage, solar system, property layout and future energy requirements.
- Use more of your own solar energy
- Store excess daytime generation
- Reduce reliance on grid electricity
- Explore suitable battery options for your home
More Control Over Your Home Energy
Solar batteries can help households manage energy generated during the day and electricity used in the evening or overnight.
Use More Solar Power
Store unused solar energy instead of sending all excess generation to the electricity grid.
Evening Energy
Use stored energy after sunset when your solar panels are no longer producing electricity.
Greater Energy Control
Monitor your energy usage and explore ways to reduce your home's reliance on grid electricity.
What Sydney Homeowners Should Consider
Every property is different. Your battery solution should be selected according to your home, electricity usage and existing solar system.
Coastal Conditions
Sydney properties may experience coastal air, humidity and changing weather conditions. Battery placement, ventilation and installation requirements should be checked for each property.
Seasonal Solar Generation
Solar generation changes throughout the year. Battery sizing should consider your seasonal solar production and typical household consumption.
Export and Network Conditions
Export limits, meter requirements and network rules may affect the way your solar and battery system is designed and connected.
How to Work Out a More Suitable Battery Size
The biggest battery is not always the best battery. A useful starting point is to study your evening and overnight electricity use, then check whether your solar system can regularly charge the battery.
Look at evening usage
Check how many kWh your home uses after solar production falls. A home using 6–10 kWh overnight may not need the same battery as a home using 20 kWh.
Check solar surplus
A large battery needs enough surplus solar, or another approved charging strategy, to fill it. If your panels rarely produce enough excess energy, a very large battery may remain partly empty.
Check battery power
kWh describes stored energy. kW describes how much power the battery can deliver at one time. A battery may have enough energy capacity but still be unable to run every high-power appliance together.
Understanding Capacity vs. Power
| Feature | Capacity (kWh) | Power (kW) |
|---|---|---|
| Simple Analogy | The size of your fuel tank | How fast the car can run |
| What it means | How much total energy your battery holds | How much electricity it can deliver at once |
| Why it matters | Determines how long your battery lasts overnight | Determines how many appliances you can run simultaneously |
Which Battery Size Fits Your Daily Energy Profile?
Once you know your evening consumption and solar surplus, match your household to the typical capacity ranges below.

How a Home Battery Actually Saves You Money
A battery is not automatically a money-saving investment for every home. The value depends on how much solar energy you would otherwise export, how much electricity you buy later, and the battery’s installed cost.
Solar surplus
During the day, your panels may produce more electricity than your home is using. Instead of exporting all of that surplus, a battery can store some of it for later.
Evening use
After sunset, your panels produce little or no energy. The battery can discharge to support lighting, refrigeration, entertainment and other household loads, reducing grid purchases.
Energy price difference
The financial benefit is influenced by the difference between the value of exported solar and the price you would otherwise pay for grid electricity. Your retailer tariff matters.
A Simple Example (Not a guaranteed saving)
Imagine your home uses 13.5 kWh of stored battery energy during peak evening hours. Every kWh of solar energy you use from your battery is electricity you don't have to buy from the grid.
| Daily Usage Scenario | Example Calculation |
|---|---|
| Stored energy used at night | 13.5 kWh |
| Grid electricity rate | $0.35 per kWh |
| Estimated daily bill reduction | 13.5 × $0.35 = $4.725 per day (~$141/month) |
Important: This is not the final saving. You must also consider charging losses, battery degradation, the value of solar you could have exported, fixed electricity charges, tariff changes and whether the battery is fully charged and discharged regularly.
How Make My Solar Helps: We handle these complex calculations for you. By analyzing your actual power bill and usage patterns, we determine true potential savings so you choose the right battery size with total clarity.
When a Battery May Be Less Suitable
A transparent battery assessment should also explain situations where the financial return may be limited.
Low evening usage
If most of your electricity is used during daylight hours, you may already be using much of your solar directly. A battery may provide less additional value.
Small solar surplus
If your existing solar system produces little excess energy, the battery may not charge consistently from solar alone.
High installation complexity
Switchboard work, long cable runs, difficult access, backup circuits or an older inverter can increase the total project cost.
Payback is an estimate, not a promise
Battery savings depend on your actual energy behaviour, electricity plan, system performance, battery warranty, installation cost and future electricity prices. Government guidance also notes that savings may not always recover the battery cost within its warranty period.
Ask us to show the assumptions behind any estimated savings or payback figure. A useful assessment should explain what happens if your usage changes or your battery does not cycle fully every day.
Questions to Ask Before Installing a Battery
These checks can prevent unexpected costs and help you choose a system that is suitable for your property.
Backup power
A normal grid-connected battery does not automatically power the home during a blackout. Backup usually requires compatible equipment, a suitable design and selected backup circuits.
Approved equipment
Check that the battery and inverter are approved for the relevant Australian program and meet applicable electrical and installation requirements.
Warranty details
Review warranty years, throughput or cycle limits, retained-capacity terms, exclusions, monitoring requirements and who handles warranty support.
Before accepting a quote, ask:
- Is the quoted capacity nominal or usable?
- What is the continuous and peak power output?
- Will the system work with my existing inverter?
- Is blackout backup included, and which circuits will it support?
- What are the warranty and monitoring arrangements?
- Is the quoted rebate confirmed or subject to eligibility?
Solar Battery Questions
Some common questions from Sydney homeowners considering residential battery storage.
Do I need solar panels before installing a battery?
Not always. Some battery systems can be installed with new solar panels, while others may be suitable for homes with an existing solar system.
What battery size is suitable for my home?
Battery sizing depends on your electricity usage, solar generation, available space and energy goals. A bill and system assessment can help identify suitable options.
Can a battery provide backup power during a blackout?
Some battery systems can provide backup power when installed with the required backup equipment. Backup capability is not automatic for every system.
Can I add a battery to my existing solar system?
In many cases, a battery can be added to an existing solar system. Compatibility, inverter type, system age and installation requirements must be checked.
Are solar battery rebates available in Sydney?
Eligible households may qualify for applicable Australian Government or NSW energy programs. Eligibility, approved products and program rules should be confirmed before installation.
Which battery brands are available?
Battery options may include SolaX, Sungrow, Growatt, Tesla Powerwall, GoodWe and BYD. Available products depend on current supply, compatibility and project requirements.
